iPhone 3GS Jailbreak Purplera1n Released

If the hacking group called iPhone Dev-Team won’t release their Jailbreak, it seems like someone else will. Developer George Hotz has released the Purplera1n jailbreak software for iPhone 3GS and by all accounts, it seems to work.
This one runs on Windows XP and Vista (Windows 7 and Mac OS aren’t supported, apparently - it’s weird for Windows 7). The jailbreak assumes that your iPhone runs with OS 3.0 (for a 3GS, that should be the case) and that you have the latest version of iTunes (may be do an update check?). The author warns that the Jailbreak is a beta, so do a full backup before running it just to be safe. Obviously, do that at your own peril, as that is clearly not supported by Apple. Good luck.

Maximum PSP Go Processor 44% Faster Than The PSP
We knew that the PSP Go was faster than the PSP-3000, but “by how much” was still a subject of speculation. It is not anymore as an FCC filing makes the PSP Go speed official. With a 480Mhz frequency, it is 44% faster than the previous 333Mhz PSP chip.
At first, most developers will manufacture certain that their games are compatible with the PSP, so it’s unlikely that they will use the added potential for anything affecting the gameplay. However, it’s not impossible to think that some eye-candy could be added when running on the PSP Go. Physics, particles, lighting or reflections would be high on the list… As the user base grows, the PSP Go could become a platform in itself as Sony will want to push their highest margin product. Sony could plus subsidize Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker to be a “PSP Go only” title for that reason.

Japan may force hybrid cars to invent more noise
When my Prius kicks into electric mode, it goes nearly silent. That’s a problem for the visually impaired considering they rely on engine noise to figure out where the cars are. Now, a Japanese transport ministry has launched a panel to explore whether some kind of noise-making device should be added to hybrid cars for safety.

Tech Expert: Nagin E-Mails Disappeared
A technology expert said Wednesday that potentially years’ worth of Mayor Ray Nagin’s e-mails have been deleted.
Christopher Reade, a partner in a tech firm who assisted the Louisiana Technology Council in efforts to recover notes for the mayor’s office, said the mailbox was removed amoung June 2008 and May 2009. He said 22 gigabytes of documents vanished from a defunct server on May 5 — the day of a conference shout with the city on the work the outside technology experts would do — but he did not know whether the mailbox was among that documents.
City technology chief M. Harrison Boyd, who came on board last summer, said he was shocked. He said controls put in place in March would have made it “virtually impossible” to delete any knowledge in May.
Boyd questioned whether the job was too big for the group to handle, adding, “Until I have the opportunity to review their methodology, I would strongly boost them to step back.”
The city blamed a faulty server for not being able to produce more records sought by WWL-TV. The station sued earlier that year by its inquiry for Nagin’s 2008 calendar and e-mails from July-through-December 2008. An attorney for WWL-TV, Mary Ellen Roy, said the calendar was turned by, and about 150 e-mails were discovered.
The mayor, as part of the lawsuit, was said to receive 50 to 100 e-mails a day and to send up to five.
The Technology Council, according to city spokesman James Ross, was hired to determine whether there were additional e-mails. Boyd said the group was brought in at his suggestion to supply an independent, third-party review — and given full access to city servers.
The Technology Council hopes to finish its work — including trying to recover the mayor’s mailbox — within the next week or two, said…

Hybrid Cellular Satellite Will Boost Rural Coverage
European space transportation provider Arianespace launched its largest satellite ever on Wednesday on behalf of TerreStar Networks — a Virginia-based company that intends to inaugurate a hybrid satellite/cellular service in the United States and Canada later that year.
TerreStar Networks has already developed a Windows Mobile smartphone with QWERTY keyboard and touchscreen capabilities for its new hybrid service. The handset will automatically switch from AT&T’s terrestrial cellular network to a satellite link at any location within the 50 U.S. states where AT&T’s local coverage is unavailable.
“We believe there are tremendous opportunities ahead — in both the commercial and government sectors,” said TerreStar President Jeff Epstein. “And we remain focused on our promise to help solve the critical communications and business-continuity challenges faced by government, emergency responders, enterprises and rural communities.”
Creating a New Paradigm
The new TerreStar-1 satellite is equipped with an 18-meter reflector capable of sending and receiving signals via about 500 spot beams, each of which will operate as a cellular tower in the sky for a specific localized area. Moreover, each individual spot beam can be custom controlled to increase the available capacity for emergency personnel responding to a natural catastrophe like Hurricane Katrina, which decimated a large part of southern Louisiana’s communications infrastructure.
“TerreStar-1 has the capability to increase both potential and capacity dynamically across spot beams with advanced ground-based beam-forming technology,” a company spokesperson said. “This feature will be particularly critical to emergency responders and other critical users.”
TerreStar’s $300 million satellite additionally has the potential to fulfill one of the priority objectives of the national broadband plan currently under development at the FCC. Later that year, the fledgling network operator intends to start providing core voice, details and video services to rural businesses and consumers in areas where cellular coverage is spotty or even nonexistent.

Another Porn App Gets Booted From Apple’s App Store
Week after week, Apple sees controversy swirl around its App Store like no other smartphone maker. Yet again, the controversy has focused on pornographic composition.
The latest application to attempt to construct its way into the App Store is called BeautyMeter. The app lets iPhone and iPod touch users view user-submitted images of men and women, soon after rate them based on anatomy and clothing. One image up for rating was of a topless 15-year-old girl. Apple booted the application on Thursday.
But that wasn’t the first duration a pornographic application made its way through Apple’s approval process. The App Store has a policy that prohibits pornography or explicit subject matter of any kind.
Last week, Apple removed an application called Hottest Girl considering it published photos of topless women. In both cases, the applications got by the approval process considering the developers slipped in the nude pictures after the program was vetted.
Controversial Apps
The list of applications Apple has rejected continues to grow. In some cases, Apple initially approved an application, only to ban it later. In others, Apple originally banned the application and next accepted it after a firestorm of negative publicity. Still others were rejected for good.
In May, Apple rejected the Me So Holy App for having “objectionable” composition. The application let iPhone users choose their religion, take a picture of themselves, and insert their face in a messianic image, among other religious scenes. Users could plus add a notice and e-mail their personalized Jesus to friends or upload it to Facebook. Hindu figures, priests and nuns were plus available.
Apple initially approved and later removed the controversial Baby Shaker application in April. Sikalosoft developed Baby Shaker, which featured a drawing of a crying baby, and the object of the game was to get the baby to stop crying. that was accomplished by…
